Gemma Wilson
The artist’s process begins with flexible ideas, allowing room for spontaneity and discovery. Letting the clay and the imparting marks guide the evolution of each piece embracing the union between intention and intuition as an organic dialogue unfolds. Using a multitude of collected tools and experimental techniques she creates layers of texture that evoke historical memories.
This process of exploration and movement ensures each piece reflects the process and evolving relationship between the maker and medium.
Slicing large slabs with coiled wires and incorporating the Japanese technique of Kirinuki she sculpts forms to create dynamic, expressive vessels and structures.
Carving into the surfaces using a selection of tools and found objects, allowing these unconventional items to impart unique textures and patterns. Throughout the process she lets the clay take an active role, responding to its natural tendencies and allowing it to influence the final piece,
Over time Gemma has created her own techniques of scoring, piping and to manipulate surfaces with depth and character. Crafting her own slips, engobes and glazes and tailoring each to complement the evolving form and texture of the work.
